Proudly serving the Pembroke community for over 50 years, Pembroke Hardware's core philosophy has been to provide its customers with exceptional quality and superior customer service. Founder Curt Locklear envisioned a neighborhood hardware store where high quality merchandise and personal attention would be top priority . After serving his country in WWII and receiving his degree from Pembroke State College, he set about making his “American Dream” a reality.

Mr. Locklear said, "At that time, you either taught or worked in agriculture, but I liked carpentry- so I got my tools and went to Fort Bragg." After stints in teaching and insurance sales, the hardware business would begin in the next few years as a family effort between Curt and his brother Monroe Lowry, an electrician. In 1960, they set up shop in Pembroke Hardware, then owned by Mr. Bernie Locklear. As he likes to say about the early days in the hardware business, “I was never discouraged - if I sold one pound of eight-penny nails for ten cents, I was happy and have been extremely happy since. I found Utopia."

Three years after starting the hardware, he and Monroe received an offer to buy the grocery building owned by the Rev. John L. Locklear. They accepted and moved their operation to the location on Main Street in Pembroke. The partnership was dissolved in 1973 when Monroe decided to devote himself full-time to his electrical business. This left Mr. Curt and wife Catherine the sole owners of Pembroke Hardware.

As it prospered, they expanded into several adjoining buildings and added extensions, including Pembroke Building Supply in 2000. Everyone knows that behind every successful man is a great woman. Sharing the ups and downs of the business has been Catherine, Curt's devoted wife of 63 years. In earlier years “Mrs. Cat” did secretarial work for the business and established an extensive house wares department. Part of the hardware family traditions included wrapping Christmas presents, delivering sales flyers and preparing the annual inventory - with the couple’s nine children sharing in the efforts.

Today, daughter Janice and sons Milton, Stephen, and Lindsey take pride in running the business their father worked so hard to establish. Another milestone was celebrated in September 2005 when ground was broken for a new facility - with the grand opening following in October 2006. The new and improved Pembroke Hardware Company, Inc. includes over 120,000 square feet of retail and warehouse footage as well as four acres of yard products. For the future, Pembroke True Value's family can only see a bright successful continuation of what Mr. Curt Locklear established so long ago. As the locals say, “If you can’t find it anywhere else, go to Curt’s, they've got it!”
