Moores' Hardware and Building Supply is located about 14 miles south of the small town of Talkeetna , Alaska. We serve the Talkeetna, Trapper Creek, Petersville, Sunshine and Caswell Lakes communities.
While stationed in Alaska with the F.A.A. in Anchorage, Bob Moore and his family built a cabin on Benka Lake about 12 miles south of Talkeetna in the late 1970's. After using the cabin for recreation for several years, his wife Kandy and he decided to make an attempt at finding a small business in Talkeetna to purchase. With the ultimate goal of moving their family to the Talkeetna area.
What they found in 1981 was Carpenter's Hardware. It wasn't much to look at. A small hardware and second hand store in a poorly insulated, run down quonset hut with a couple of ramshackle additions tacked on. It was the beginning of, what was known then as, Moores' Mercantile.
With the help of their two sons, Doug (12) and Mike (10), they began the daunting task of cleaning up and remodelling the store to their liking.
At first, the store relied on purchasing their supplies from Anchorage . A 100 mile drive to the south. In 1983, realising a need for a more competitive supplier, the Moores became a True Value Hardware store. True Value was a nationwide co-op of independent hardware stores pooling their buying power together. True Value remains, to this day, a leader in the hardware co-op industry. They allowed Moores' to be a competitive store, even in their rural Alaska location.
In 1984 Moores' purchased property at the junction of the Talkeetna Spur Rd. and the Parks Highway, 14 miles south of Talkeetna. This location provided easier access to the residents living along the Parks Hwy. since the Spur road was a dead end. Moores' began with a lumber yard and small warehouse that was staffed by one of the teenage sons. The yard enabled Moores' to sell greater quantities of lumber at a better price. Unfortunately, to buy hardware, you still had to go to the Talkeetna store.
Moores' cured that problem in 1988 by building a new modern store at the Talkeetna Junction location and closing their Talkeetna store. Closely on the heels of the new store, a new computer point of sale system followed. This allowed the store to remain efficient and competitive in the ever growing Upper-Susitna Valley market.
In the mid 1990's both sons, Doug and Mike, returned from college and other lines of work to become managers in the ever growing store. Along with Doug's wife April, and Mike's wife Tammy, the Moore family continued their tradition of small town service and modern excellence. In 1997 the growing business incorporated into what is now Moores' Hardware and Building Supply, Inc.
In 2000 we began construction of what it our third building. Located on the same Talkeetna Junction property as our second building, we have a new totally modern 10,000 square foot store. We opened the doors on this building on Feb 1st, 2001
